- Adam Millard-Ball

Biographical Information
Adam Millard-Ball came to E-IPER after eight years as an urban planner, researcher and journalist, specializing in programs to reduce traffic and automobile dependence. As a principal at San Francisco-based consulting firm Nelson\Nygaard, Adam led transit-oriented development, parking policy and Smart Growth projects on both East and West coasts, and served as Principal Investigator for a major Transportation Research Board study on car-sharing. His international experience includes a stint as as a transportation policy journalist in London; and transportation planning in Mexico, Tanzania and China.
Research Interests
Adam's research interests bridge urban planning and environmental economics. Current projects include the effectiveness of municipal Climate Action Plans in reducing emissions; incorporating transportation into carbon offset programs; and regulatory design for including transportation in cap-and-trade. His recent research on the Clean Development Mechanism, a major carbon offset program, uses transportation as a case study to expose wider problems with quantifying offsets, bringing into question the overall reality of emission reductions from offset projects.
Teaching Activities
Adam has been a Teaching Assistant or co-instructor for several climate policy and transportation planning classes at Stanford, most recently Sustainable Mobility. In 2009, he received a Centennial Teaching Assistant award from Stanford.
