Biographical Information
A Canadian citizen, Joanne Gaskell received her BA (hons) in Biology and Economics from Swarthmore College and her MS in Economics from Stanford. She was a Research Assistant at the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington, D.C. before joining E-IPER to continue her inquiry into food policy and development questions as a PhD student. Joanne lives with her husband in Redwood City.
Research Interests
Joanne has authored publications on biofuels, food security, international trade, and the environmental impacts of agriculture. Her dissertation (advised by Roz Naylor) focuses on the palm oil industry, and its impacts on economic development, land use, and the environment.
Joanne is a member of Stanford’s Program on Food Security and the Environment.
Teaching Activities
Joanne's teaching experience includes two years as the head Teaching Assistant for the World Food Economy (a popular undergraduate Economics course), in addition to class lectures in the departments of Earth Systems and Biology.
Previously, Joanne worked at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), where she was a member of the Spatial Analysis Research Group, headed by Stanley Wood, that addressed the spatial dimensions of agricultural production systems, productivity, ecosystem services, and market access.
