- Joint MS
Eligibility
Prior Degrees: Joint MS applicants must hold a BA or BS degree from an accredited US college or university or its equivalent from an international institution of recognized standing, as listed in the Graduate Admissions site, and must also apply to and be accepted by, or have already matriculated in the Graduate School of Business (GSB) Stanford Law School, or School of Medicine. Note that there is no stand-alone E-IPER MS degree and the Joint MS degree is not a pathway for entering E-IPER's PhD program.
Test Scores: Joint MS applicants are not required to submit GRE scores, but may choose to do so. Joint MS applicants should submit the LSAT, GMAT, or MCAT scores they submitted with their professional school application. Because the LSAT does not include a quantitative component, students applying for the Joint JD-MS should include a brief paragraph describing their quantitative preparation (ie. previous coursework in mathematics and sciences, etc. or relevant professional work) for the science and engineering courses that are required for the Joint MS.
English Language Skills: Applicants whose first language is not English must submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores from an examination taken within 18 months of applying. A score of at least 600 on the paper-based, 250 on the computer-based, or 100 on the internet-based TOEFL is expected in order to begin graduate studies. Applicants with a BA or BS or 2-year masters degree from an accredited, English-speaking university may request an exemption from the TOEFL requirement from the Stanford Graduate Admissions office.
Quantitative Skills: E-IPER's interdisciplinary coursework and research typically requires foundational quantitative skills including, at minimum, college level calculus and statistics. Prospective students' quantitative skills will be assessed by the admissions committee via standardized test scores, previous course work, and professional experience. Admitted students lacking minimum skills should be prepared to take "refresher" summer courses at Stanford or other appropriate training.
The E-IPER Program provides students with a focused science and technical background for environmental issues while also allowing them to pursue interdisciplinary themes melding science, policy, economics, law, and business. Students interested in a policy-focused program should explore Stanford's Masters Program in Public Policy.
Process
Starting in AY 2009-2010, there are two ways to apply for the Joint MS:
1. For students not already enrolled in a professional school, you may apply at the same time you apply to the Graduate School of Business or Stanford Law School following the instructions and deadlines included in the MBA and JD application:
MBA:
An additional statement of purpose (2 pages maximum) will be required as part of your MBA application. The statement of purpose should describe your specific interest in the E-IPER program and the necessity of interdisciplinary training for your future career goals. Applications accepted by the GSB will be forwarded to E-IPER for review. Students will be notified of acceptance for the MBA and Joint MS at the same time.
JD:
Indicate your interest in the E-IPER Joint MS and your law school application will be forwarded to E-IPER for review if you are accepted by Stanford Law School. E-IPER will request an additional statement of purpose detailing your specific interest in the E-IPER program and the necessity of interdisciplinary training for your future career goals. Students may be notified of their acceptance for the Joint MS after they have been accepted for the JD.
MD:
Applicants to the School of Medicine with an interest in the Joint MS should contact E-IPER directly.
2. For students currently enrolled in Stanford's Graduate School of Business, Stanford Law School, or School of Medicine: You may apply during winter quarter of your first year, following the instructions below. The deadline for applications to begin the Joint MS in Autumn 2010 is Friday, February 19, 2010 at 5 p.m. Students will be notified of E-IPER’s admission decisions by the end of March, 2010.
To Apply:
a) Ask your professional school admissions or academic operations office to forward a complete copy of your GSB, Stanford Law School, or School of Medicine application to E-IPER by the February 19 deadline.
b) Submit the following application materials to E-IPER:
-A statement of purpose (2 pages maximum). The statement of purpose should describe your specific interest in the E-IPER program and the necessity of interdisciplinary training for your future career goals.
-An unofficial Stanford transcript that includes your Autumn quarter/semester grades and Winter quarter classes.
-For Joint JD-MS students only: Because the LSAT does not include a quantitative component, students applying for the Joint JD-MS should include a brief paragraph describing their quantitative preparation (ie. previous coursework in mathematics and sciences, etc. or relevant professional work) for the science and engineering courses that are required for the Joint MS.
Review Process:
Applications will be reviewed by the E-IPER Joint MS Admissions Committee using a holistic process to consider each applicant’s academic preparation, professional experience, and career goals. The strongest candidates will clearly demonstrate how they will integrate their prior experiences with their E-IPER education and why an interdisciplinary graduate degree is necessary for their career goals. The Joint MS program is growing rapidly and may not be able to accept all interested students.
Funding
There is no application fee, but students who matriculate in the Joint MS are required to pay a fee to the Registrar to add their E-IPER graduate career. Joint MS students are responsible for paying GSB tuition for two years or Stanford Law School tuition for three years, and then pay Stanford graduate school tuition for any additional quarters. Rates are set by the University each year and depend on the number of graduate units taken.
E-IPER is not able to provide funding for Joint MS students at this time. However, financial aid may be available through the individual professional schools, in some cases targeted specifically to students pursuing the Joint MS:
Stanford Law School
Graduate School of Business
School of Medicine
